Midtown Underground began in June 2002 literally underground in the art district of downtown Pontiac MI. A collective that has now grown to six solid members, MU was originally conceived primarily as an R&B/Jazz trio backing a vocalist. The group quickly picked up additional members along the way at jam sessions and gigs in and around metro Detroit.
With the additional members came momentum. The end result is a tour de force of energized, highly danceable music intended to shake your bones and put a smile on your face.
The Midtown Underground live repoirtoire consists of original material mixed with an array of old school funk, jazz, and R&B. Although the band takes great pride in paying homage to their musical heroes, the prevailing attitude is definitely modern. Their roots oriented tunes embrace the dynamic beats of past, present, and future Detroit music. The mission: Innovation, Truth, Respect, Improvisation, Meaning.
